The first edition, first impression. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. With a colour frontispiece, fifty-two illustrations and a large folding map, illustrating the expedition route, to the rear of the book. Collated complete. The fascinating travelogue of an English journalist who accompanied the expeditionary force led by Sir Francis Younghusband into Tibet in 1903-4. Giving an overview of the scenery, culture and political unrest in the region, including the authors first-hand account of the storm of the Gyantse Dzong. Edmund Candler was an English journalist who worked as a correspondent for the Daily Mail. His work predominantly recounts his experiences in colonial India and Asia, and is often compared to the writings of Rudyard Kipling, who was a major influence upon the author. The half title page is present. With sixteen pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. With the previous owner's neat ink signature to the front paste-down.

Condition

In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed with shelf wear to the edges. Cracks to the joints. Bumping and closed tears to the upper spine. Fading to the spine. Staining and cockling to the rear board. Light marks to the front board. Hinges strained but still attached. Rear hinge could become loose with further handling. Handling marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Internally, binding strained but firm. Pages generally bright and clean with handling marks and scattered spots throughout. Spotting heavier towards the front. Light age-toning to the edges. Closed tear of about two inches to the folding map. Light marks to the folding map but otherwise very bright and clean.
