Waddell provides an account of the British Mission to Lhasa, led by the legendary British explorer and soldier, Colonel Younghusband, and his army of 2,800 Indian soldiers.
Illustrated with three colour plates, eight maps of which three are folding, and one-hundred and eleven half tone plates. With further vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.
With the cloth of the publisher's original front board bound in to the rear.
Retaining the original half title.
With the armorial bookplate of John Fraser to the front pastedown.
Waddell has been regarded by some as having been a real-life inspiration for the character Indiana Jones.
Condition
Rebound in half tree calf, with marbled paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. A touch of rubbing to joints and minor fading to back strip, otherwise externally excellent. Front hinge a touch strained but firmly held. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. The cloth of the publisher's original front board is bound in to the rear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, but with occasional instances of spotting and foxing to page fore edges.
