What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

The extremely scarce, first thus, 1905 edition of this work, with illustrated plates from Harold Hume Piffard.

Originally published in 1848, this is the work of Anglican high-church priest John Mason Neale. Reprinted here by The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, this is a fictionalised account for the benefit of child readers, relaying the motivations and actions of French Loyalists during the Revolution between 1793 and 1794.

The illustrator of this volume, Piffard, was a talented oil and watercolour painter, alongside illustrating over one hundred novels in his lifetime, from contemporary authors such as Francis Hodgson Burnett to a series of classics for Collins including works for Dickens and George Elliot. Extraordinarily, Piffard was also one of Britain's first aviators, undertaking numerous test flights for aircraft in development.

Featuring a nine page publisher's catalogue to the rear of the work.

A contemporary owner's inscription to the half title refers to 'Ada Bailey, March 28th 1909'.

Condition
