With commentary on the poor sanitary conditions and public apathy that allowed it to take hold. Yeast: A Problem, 1908. The first novel from the author, written as an attack on Roman Catholicism and the Oxford Movement, as well as the social systems keeping England’s agricultural labouring class in poverty. Hereward the Wake, 1910. Telling the story of Hereward, a historical Anglo-Saxon figure who led resistance against the Normans. This novel is credited with elevating Hereward into an English folk-hero.
