A limited edition reprint of Richard Jobson's account of his expedition along the River Gambia in 1620 - 1621. 300 copies were printed on handmade paper, the present is copy 240. Prior to the intensification of the Atlantic Slave Trade, Jobson sailed up the river Gambia in search of gold. Jobson's account provides an important early description of the culture and society of several West African Kingdom's, including the Fula and Mandinka peoples. Pages include woodcut ornamentation based on African designs by Robert Morton Nance, who was not only an accomplished artist, but also a leading authority on the Cornish language. Undated. Dated using JISC from a copy held at the Library of the British Museum.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding over hard boards. Externally, smart. A little discoloured to the fore edge and near the joint of the front board, with a black mark to the rear board. Some light wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little cockled, but bright and clean throughout.
