What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Charles Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory, initially intended as a chapter to The Descent of Man. It was published separately in 1872. A work that has never run out of print, despite it being labelled by many as 'Darwin's forgotten masterpiece.'

Edited by Francis Darwin. No half title.

Concerning the biological aspects of emotional life, particularly focussing on the animal behaviour in the expression of emotions such as the lifting of the eyebrows in moments of surprise, with a particular concentration on six main emotional states, being happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust.

Also considered to be an important landmark in the history of book illustrations, it was one of the first books to include photographs. Collated, complete with twenty-three full page plates, comprising engravings of the Darwin family's domestic pets as well as portraits from photographs. The publisher John Murray notoriously told Darwin that the inclusion of photographs would "poke a hole in the profits."

Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities.
