What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

A fascinating and comprehensive ethnographical and travel work on Japan. This work is divided into four parts: (I) Japan from a Woman's Point of View; (II) Japanese History of Napoleon, with Lives of Peter the Great, Alexander the Great, and Aristotle, and Notes on France and Greece; (III) The Original Letters of the English Pilot, William Adams; and (IV) Japan from a Man's Point of View.

The famous letters of the Elizabethan navigator William Adams, the first Englishman to travel to Japan, are the first known account of Japan written in English. Prior to publication in this work, they had been out of print for many years, and have been included in this work by special permission of the Hakluyt Society.

This work was written by Douglas Sladen and Norma Lorimer.

The first edition of this work.

Including an illustrated frontispiece in colour, four double-paged illustrated plates in colour, and an additional twenty-four double-paged illustrated plates in black-and-white. Collated and complete.

This was the personal copy of Marcia Pelham, Countess of Yarborough, noted by her bookplate to the front pastedown.
