    Illustrated, Uncommon

    A three-volume set of this work in the publisher's original cloth bindings.

    Édouard Lantéri (1848-1917) was a sculptor and medallist, whose romantic French-style sculpture influenced the New Sculpture movement. His books are still often used as required texts on sculpture courses. This particular work is now uncommon.

    Volume I (1922, second edition) covers tools; casting the head and facial features; the proportions of the figure; and much more. Preface by Onslow Ford. Illustrated with forty-two plates, including a portrait frontispiece, and numerous in-text illustrations. A six-page publisher's catalogue to the rear.

    Volume II (1904) covers reliefs, drapery, medals, and composition. Preface by Sir W. B. Richmond. Illustrated with sixty-two plates and numerous in-text illustrations.

    Volume III (1911) covers the sculpture of animal subjects, particularly the horse, the lion and the bull; casting busts, figures and high relief in plaster; and a final word. Illustrated with sixty-two plates and numerous in-text illustrations.

    Condition

    In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, generally smart, with light shelf wear and the odd bump to the extremities. Marks to the spine and rear board of volume I, and to the spine and boards of volume III. Tear to the rear joint of volume II and III, and a small hole to the front joint of volume II. Hinges are slightly strained to volume II but remain firmly held. Front hinge to volume III is tender, and may detach upon further handling; rear hinge is slightly strained but remains firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, except for the odd spot and handling mark to the pages of volume II.
