Description

An Important Work, Publishers' Original Binding

The third edition of this work, which first appeared in 1891.

This work closely examines the origins of marriage rituals and human pairing during primitive times, celbiacy and choice, sexual selection amongst animals and man, the law of similarity, prohibition of incestuous marriages, sexual selection, duration, ceremonies and rites.

Written by Edvard Westermarck, a Finish sociologist and philosopher known for his studies of exogamy and the taboo of incest. This was an important work, a classic of its day, and introduces what became known as the Westermarck effect - that those who live closely together in early years of life become desensitized to sexual attraction between each other.
