What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding, Original Binding

A 1903 edition of this work, in a full calf school prize binding, with an illustrated frontispiece.

Written by siblings and poets Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807, this a retelling of the plays of Shakespeare, sensitive to the preferences of children. Mary was responsible for the prose retelling of the comedies, and Charles the tragedies. By omitting the histories, Roman plays, sexual references and subplots, the work has proven enduringly popular and never been out of print.

A school prize bookplate appears at the front pastedown, identifying the work as awarded by headmaster Henry S. Biggs of Lutterworth Grammar School, Leicester, to student L. E. Buck on July 27th, 1904. Biggs himself was a published writer, having produced a catalogue of the library of the Leicester Freemason's Hall.

Condition

In a full calf school prize binding with gilt detailing. Externally, lovely. Very small losses to the extremities and spine. School prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Some spotting to the first and last few pages, but otherwise pages bright and clean.
