Description

Leather Binding

New Edition. Translated into French, it includes the Bible's New Testament. Translated into Latin, the Vulgate bible was the primary religious text used in Catholic Church in the 16th century. It was the clementine edition of the Vulgate that was the Biblical text of choice, from the 26th century to as late as 1979. It was translated into Latin by Pope Damasus I's protege, Jerome, he wrote extensively, often commenting on the Gospel. With additional notes and introduction by J.B Glaire, Catholic Priest and biblical scholar, and F. Vigouroux, a priest who outspokenly defended the historicity of the Bible. Handsomely bound, with the previous owners endearing ink inscription to the front free endpaper, which reads, 'L'ma chere petite amie Susie, souvenir tres affectment de Germaine. 3/7/1912.'

Condition

In a half calf binding, with marbled boards, and gilt detailing to the spine. Externally, smart. Minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Spotting to the fore edge. Very minor rubbing to the marbled pastedown, to the front of the volume. Previous owners ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have some light foxing, to the first and last pages, with the odd spot throughout the volume.
