What Our Customers Say...
Illustrated, Leather Binding
Volumes 2, 4, 6, and 11 from the Works of Charles Lamb published by J.M. Dent and Sons. Includes Last Essays of Elia, Essays and Sketches, Tales from Shakespeare, and the first volume of Letters of Charles Lamb. All of the volumes are illustrated by C.E. Brock, and prefaced by William MacDonald, who provides a memoir of Lamb in volume 2. The conversational tone of the Lamb's essays made him particularly popular throughout the 19th century, and the Last Essays of Elia contain essays such as The Superannuated Man written the year before his death. Tales from Shakespeare is was written by Charles and his sister Mary, and although intended for young people, the stories retain Shakespearean language. In the final volume in this collection, the reader is given the opportunity to read the epistles between Lamb and his literary friends Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, and William Hazlitt.
