A pleasing set of these fascinating studies of Japanese and Chinese culture, comprising volumes 1-8 on Japan and volumes 9-12 on China.
From Anglo-Irish newspaper owner, editor and scholar, Francis Brinkley, who resided in Meiji period Japan for over forty years. He is subsequently the author of numerous works on Japanese culture and art, as well as an English-Japanese dictionary.
Adorned with illustrations in colour, duo-tone and monochrome, comprising photographic plates as well as line drawings and other illustrations.
With seventeen plates to volume I, sixteen to volume II, eighteen to volume III, seventeen to volume IV, sixteen to volume V, eighteen to volume VI, thirty to volume VII, twenty-one to volume VIII, nineteen to volume X, nineteen to volume XI, and sixteen to volume XII.
With a large folding map to the rear of volume XII.
Collated, complete.
Condition
Uniformly bound in the original red cloth, with decorative gilt to the spines. Externally, very smart. With light rubbing and bumping to the extremities, and fading to the spines' cloth. The odd mark to the boards and spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot, and offsetting to the endpapers.
