Written by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863). Most renowned for 'Vanity Fair' which satirises life in early 19th century Britain, Thackeray was primarily known for his satires and parodies, criticising high society and the fickle aspirations of its members, such as profitability, marriage and power.
Each volume is illustrated with plates throughout, including a frontispiece, as well as in-text illustrations through the biographical introductions. Collated, complete.
Volume I contains 'Vanity Fair', and is illustrated with twenty-one plates.
Volume II contains 'The History of Pendennis', and is illustrated with twenty plates.
Volume III contains 'The Memoirs of Mr. Charles J. Yellowplush, the Great Hoggarty Diamond', and is illustrated with twenty-four plates.
Volume IV contains 'The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq.', and is illustrated with fifteen plates.
Volume V contains 'The Paris Sketch Book', 'The Irish Sketch Book' and 'Notes of a Journey from Cornhill to Cairo', and is illustrated with sixteen plates.
Volume VI contains 'Contributions to Punch', and is illustrated with twenty plates.
Volume VII contains 'The History of Henry Esmond, Esq.', and is illustrated with fifteen plates.
Volume VIII contains 'The Newcomes', and is illustrated with eighteen plates.
Volume IX contains 'The Christmas Books of Mr. M. A. Titchmarsh', and is illustrated with forty-three plates.
Volume X contains 'The Virginians', and is illustrated with nineteen plates.
Volume XI contains 'The Adventures of Philip on his way Through the World', and is illustrated with nineteen plates.
Volume XII contains 'The Wolves and the Lamb', 'Lovel the Widower', 'Roundabout Papers' and 'Denis Duval', and is illustrated with seventeen plates, as well as a folding plate in the introduction.
Volume XIII contains Thackeray's ballads, reviews, essays, letters, tales and sketches, and is illustrated with twelve plates.
Acquired from the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an English socialite and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was featured by Cecil Beaton in 'The Book of Beauty'. Amongst her circle were Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali, Winston and Clementine Churchill and Nancy Mitford.

Condition
In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally lovely, with just the occasional slightest rubbing; spines are faded as to be expected with this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, bar some spotting to the first and final leaves.
