Illustrated, Limited Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed, Very Scarce
Each volume number seventy-four of one-hundred and six copies, printed, with volume I signed by British illustrator E. J. Sullivan to the colophon. This limited edition with Sullivan's illustrations is very scarce.
Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume, and eighteen further plates equally divided across both volumes. Collated, complete.
First published serially between 1819 and 1820, 'The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.', commonly referred to as 'The Sketch Book', is a collection of thirty-four essays and short stories, including two of Irving's best known tales: 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow', and 'Rip Van Winkle'.
With a former owner's inscription, dated Christmas 1903, to the volume I half title.
Condition
In the publisher's original quarter paper vellum binding, with paper covered boards. Discolouration to back strips, with bumping to spine head and tail. Inscription to half title of volume I, with ink penetrating to verso of leaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Fore edge of final few leaves of volume II unopened.
