An early illustrated edition of this work in the red pictorial cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine and decorative end papers. This novel, which follows Allan Quatermain and his group of adventurers, is one of the first English adventure novels to be set in Africa. As Quartermain searches for a missing brother, they explore an uncharted region of Africa. This work is considered to be the genesis of the "Lost World" literary genre.
Previous owner's bookplate to the front free end paper.
Illustrated with a frontispiece and eight further plates by Walter Paget (1862-1935), as well as the folding colour map. Collated, complete. Paget provided illustrations for numerous authors, including for Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare and Arthur Conan Doyle's short story 'The Adventure of the Dying Detective'.
Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English author who specialised in adventure fiction set in exotic locations.

Condition
In the red pictorial cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with a little fading to the spine and small faint marks to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot. Significant tear to the folding colour map.
