What Our Customers Say...

Description

Decorative Binding, Illustrated, Scarce, Signed

George Gilbert is a pseudonym for Mary Lucy Arthur. Signed by the author, to the recto of front endpaper. Very unsually a signed copy. This work is based on the romance and life of Maria Fitzherbert. Fitzherbert was a longtime companion of the future King George IV with whom she secretly contracted a marriage which was invalid under English civil law. Arthur states to the preface that she is unsure on the accuracy of her fictional work, which is founded on fact. She admits she is unsure of the authenticity of love-letters she uses which she found in a book in Brighton library. 'I do not pretend or wish this to be thought a biography of Mrs Fitzherbert. It is put forth as a novel, founded on fact and written with the purpose of emphasising the essential particular that an illegal marriage did take place.'
