A detailed historical study of the ancient votive offerings on the Acropolis of Athens, with chapters on heroes, war, disease, domestic life, memorials, rarities and valuables, disposal of offerings, and much more. Written by William Henry Denham Rouse, a pioneering British scholar and teacher who advocated the use of the "direct method" of teaching Latin and Greek. With newspaper articles pasted to the rear pastedown and endpaper.

Condition

In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the extremities. Light fading to the spine and board edges. Internally, firmly bound with front endpaper loosening, sympathetic reinforcement made with tape. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. Light spotting to the first and last few pages with age toning to the endpapers. Newspaper articles pasted to the rear pastedown and endpaper. Previous owner's ink stamp to the front pastedown.
