Very scarce, reprint. This paricular volume was originally annoymously published, and was later accredited to Balfour Stewart and P. G. Tait. A work written by the meteorologist Balfour Stewart. Written in conjunction with by P. G. Tait. Also a physicist, Tait was a pioneer in thermodynamics. This particular work explores brings together science and religion and attempts to challenges the idea the they are inherently incompatible. Stewart himself was deeply religious. Indeed this work inspired the William James who, in a review of the work first proposed, what would later be coined, 'The Will to Believe', the ideal that you may adopt a belief without prior evidence of its truth. With a bookplate to the Royal Masonic School, dated 1909.
Condition
In a full calf binding, with gilt detail to the front board and spine. Externally, smart. Light fading to the spine, as to be expected with green calf. Patches of rubbing to the joint and extremities. Light rubbing to the raised bands, with slightly heavier rubbing to the head of spine. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with light spots to the first and last pages.
