1901 The Life-History of British Serpents
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Written by Gerald R. Leighton, a British zoologist and reptile specialist.
The first edition of this work.
From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an English socialite and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was featured by Cecil Beaton in 'The Book of Beauty'. Amongst her circle were Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali, Winston and Clementine Churchill and Nancy Mitford.
With the ownership inscription of Leonard Harrison Matthews, a British zoologist known for his work on marine mammals. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a prolific author.
Illustrated with forty-nine illustrations, some of which have been rebacked. The re-inserted plates are on glossier paper than the original plates, implying that they are possibly reproductions of the original illustrations. A few leaves of text have also been removed and re-inserted as handwritten facsimiles of the text, possibly by Harrison Matthews.
Condition
In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with some slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Ownership inscription to the half title page. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are occasionally a little spotted. With some plates and illustrations replaced with facsimile handwriting and copies of original illustrations.
