Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and ninety-eight black-and-white plates and in-text illustrations by a range of artists including J. S. Eland (1872-1932).
This is an insightful work on the 'art of illustration', particularly through the use of paper for book illustrations. The object of the book is 'to explain the modern systems of Book and Newspaper Illustration, and especially the methods of drawing for what is commonly called 'process,' on which so many artists are now engaged'.
Contents include 'Elementary Illustration', 'Artistic Illustrations', 'The Processes', 'Wood Engraving', 'The Decorative Page', 'Author, Illustrator & Publisher', and 'Colour Printing Applied to Illustration'.
Written by Henry Blackburn (1830-1897), who was the editor of 'Academy Notes' and a Cantor Lecturer on Illustration.

Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Minimal bumping to the extremities and spine with some age-toning and discolouration to the margins of boards, as well as a few marks. Publisher's note adhered to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very clean throughout, with the pages being lightly age-toned.
