Description

First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce, With Dustwrapper

The first edition.

Bound in the publisher's cloth, with the original, very scarce unclipped dust wrapper.

A biographical work surrounding the life and career of nineteenth century British poet, novelist and children's author, Jean Ingelow. Born in 1820, Ingelow began her writing career with contributions to periodicals, often publishing her work anonymously or under the pseudonym 'Orris'. She was known for her romantic themes entertwined with a strong Christian faith.

These recollections were written anonymously, although possibly written by one of her sisters, Eliza Straffen nee Ingelow, as suggested by M. Peters in 'Jean Ingelow: Victorian Poetess' (p.106).

Illustrated with a frontispiece of the author. Collated, complete.

Condition

Bound in the publisher's cloth, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with a little bumping to the extremities and a touch of fading to the spine head and tail. Gift label to front endpaper. Dust wrapper is also very smart, with light chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Sunning to the wrap's spine and extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. Frontispiece and tissue guard are working loose. Pages are bright, with scattered spots, predominantly to the first and last few pages and to the fore edge.
