A signed first edition Edition de Luxe of this beautifully illustrated turn of the century study of Japan. No. 170 of 600 copies printed in this edition, and signed by the author and illustrator, artist Mortimer Menpes.
A fascinating artistic record of Menpes's 1887 visit to Japan, with notes made on the journey transcribed by his daughter, Dorothy Whistler. Menpes discusses Geisha, Japanese gardens, painters in Japan and the lives of Japanese children.
Accompanying these descriptive passages are 100 bright full colour plates, reproductions of watercolours made by Menpes during his travels. Collated, complete.

In the publisher's original cloth binding, rebacked, and with original cloth back strip laid down. Significant discolouration to back strip, with marks to boards. Front hinge starting, with board holding firm. Contemporary inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
