First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first Thomson edition. This edition includes many illustrations, both plates and vignettes, by the Irish illustrator Hugh Thomson. He is famous for his pen and ink illustrations, of which there are many fine examples here. In his career he illustrated many notable editions of famous authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. A Kentucky Carnival is a work heavily influenced by Allen's childhood experiences. Allen spent his youth in Lexington during the Antebellum era, the American Civil War and the Reconstruction periods. This story is the first tale in the A Kentucky Cardinal series. James Lane Allen was an American novelist and short story writer. His work often depicts the culture and dialects of his native Kentucky.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with gilt stamping to the front board and spine. Externally, smart with might bumping to the head of spine. Small loss to the cloth at the rear joint. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper, dated 72. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Scattered spots to endpapers, otherwise pages are very clean.
