The scarce third impression of the first edition. In two volumes. Only 140 copies of the third impression were made available. The publisher's original cloth boards rebacked onto blue cloth. Volume one has a portrait frontispiece, thirty two vignette illustrations and plates and eighteen maps and plans. With thirty-two pages of the publisher's catalogue to the rear of the book. Collated complete. Volume two has twenty four vignette illustrations and plates, and sixteen maps and plans. Lacking the frontispiece. 'The River War', is a historical account of the conquest of Sudan, led by Lord Kitchener, between 1896 and 1899. Including Winston Churchill's personal accounts and opinions from his time spent there as an officer for the British Army. This was Churchill's second published book after, 'The Story of Malakand Field Force'. Edited by Col. F. Rhode and illustrated by Angus McNeill from the Seaforth Highlanders. The half title pages are present. With library stamps throughout from Prahran Public Library.

Condition

The publisher's original pictorial cloth boards rebacked on contemporary cloth. Externally, with shelf wear to the edges. Marks to the boards and spine. The odd small mark to the paste-downs and free endpapers of volume one. Internally, generally firmly bound. The frontispiece of volume two is missing. Age-toning to the edges but the text is bright and clear. Scattered handling marks throughout. Marks to page 186 and 187 of volume one. The folding map in volume one on page 146 has been repaired with tape. Small open tear to the upper map on page 80 of vol. 2. Creasing to the map on page 156 of vol. 2. Library stamps throughout.
