Lang was a pioneer in his field as he used such a wide variety of sources. Many of these tales made their first appearance in the English language due to Lang's translation. Although Lang made most of the selections himself for the works, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and retelling of the stories. The first edition of this work. Collated, complete. The Grey Fairy Book contains thirty-five stories from oral traditions, as well as French, German and Italian collections. Tales include 'Donkey Skin', 'The Goat-Faced Girl', 'The Bear', 'The Dog and the Sparrow', 'The Twin Brothers', 'Prunella' and 'The Street Musicians'.
Condition
In a full decorative cloth binding. Externally, very smart with just some light rubbing to the joints. Ink spill to the head of front board and occasional handling marks to boards. Prior owner's inscription to the front board, 'Cecil Rice 1900'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
