The scarce first UK edition of this important work from American philosopher William James, one of the most influential philosophers in the United States, referred to as the 'Father of American Philosophy'.

A fascinating collection essays based upon a series of lectures given by James in Harvard in 1892, when he worked there as a professor. The first fifteen essays are derived from the lectures he gave to teachers, with the final three subtitled 'talks to students'. 

James, the brother of novelist Henry James, discusses 'The Gospel of Relaxation' and 'The Child as a Behaving Organism', among other topics.

Three pages of advertisements to the rear, with pencil inscription to front free endpaper.
