In the original French. A set of four novels by the influential French author Honore de Balzac. Containing; 'Le Lys Dans la Vallee', undated, illustrated by Edouard Toudouze. This novel is all about love and society, particular the vibrant affection between Felix de Vandenesse. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and six plates. 'Le Cousin Pons', published in 1900, illustrated by Robaudi. This novel is about Sylvain Pons, a Parisian musician, who is passionate about collecting works of arts. Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates. 'Le Contrat de Mariage', published in 1902, illustrated by Toudouze, Cortazzo, and Jose Roy. This novel is set in Bordeaux, and described the marriage of a Parisian gentleman to a beautiful spoiled Spanish heiress. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and six plates. 'Le Medecin de Campagne', published in 1908, illustrated by Daniel Hernandez. This novel is about social organisation, political power, and religion. Illustrated with eight plates. Written by Honore de Balzac, the noted French novelist and playwright, best known for his novel sequence 'La Comedie Humaine'.

Condition

In a quarter morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the spines and light rubbing to the boards. A little bumping to the extremities. Crack to the head of the front joint of 'Le Cousin Pons'. Light spots to the fore edges. Front hinges of all volumes except 'Contrat de Mariage' are starting but firm. Rear hinge of 'Le Cousin Pons' and 'Le Medecin de Campagne' starting but firm. Ink annotation to the recto to the rear endpaper of 'Le Lys Dans la Vallee'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Title page of 'Le Cousin Pons' lifting to the tail. Small closed tear to the head of page 1 of 'Le Cousin Pons'. Loss to page 325/6 of 'Le Contrat de Mariage', causing loss of text.
