    First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

    The first edition of this work. Originally written in 1882 but not published until 1889.

    Haggard refers to this conflict as the 'Last' Boer War, unaware of the subsequent Second Boer War that would take place from 1899 to 1902. 

    Appendix to rear. Author's note to preface. 

    H Rider Haggard was a famous English writer of adventure fiction, mainly known for the use of exotic settings and as a pioneer of the lost world literary genre.

    Condition

    In the original publisher's wraps, rebacked. Externally with light chipping and creasing to extremities, wraps lightly marked. Previous ownership inscription to front free endpaper dated 1907, and to half title dated 1899. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to first and las few leaves, not affecting pages that are otherwise generally bright and clean.
