The first edition thus of this edition of the popular Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, with a preface by American editor and translator Nathan Haskell Dole. A scarce edition.
A selection of quatrains translated to English from the original Persian. It became popular by the later half of the nineteenth century, and was published in over one hundred editions, inspiring other translations to English and many other languages. This edition was rendered into English by Edward Fitzgerald, who first proposed a translation in 1859.
A charming pocket sized American edition, including notes, in an exquisite signed Zaehnsdorf binding.
Condition
In a full morocco binding with five raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine and boards as well as marbled endpapers. Externally lovely with only minor shelf wear and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Minor rubbing to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the odd leaf only, otherwise the pages are bright and clean.
