The first edition of this beautifully illustrated study of the hussars of the French army, between their founding from Hungarian deserters in 1692, to just before the beginning of their role as cavalry in the Revolutionary Wars, from 1792.
Illustrated by M. de Fonremis, with a title page and twelve further chromolithographic plates, retaining their original tissue guards, and with one folding facsimile plate. With numerous further vignette colour illustrations. Collated, complete.
With accompanying descriptive and contextual text by French writer Captain H. Choppin.
Undated; dated 1899 via Jisc and WorldCat. Frequently miss-dated 1898 from preface.
A lovely copy of this work, in the scarce publisher's original cloth binding.
Condition
In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, with a small loss of cloth to the head of the rear joint. Light discolouration to head of front board. Hinges reinforced with cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned to perimeters but generally clean and bright, with only the odd spot.
