An exciting first edition of the annual eighteenth report of the Bureau of American Ethnology 1896-97; established in 1879 for the purpose of transferring archives, records, and materials relating to the Indians of North America from the Interior Department to the Smithsonian Institution, the bureau soon took on a different path and started organising research-intensive multi-year projects, sponsoring ethnographic, archaeological and linguistic field research, initiating publications series, and promoting the fledgling discipline of anthropology, as well as much more, under John Wesley Powell, the founding director and author of this book, who had a mission of organising anthropologic research in America.

This is Part I of two, complete in itself and dedicated to the Eskimo.
