Description

Colour Plates, Early Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Under the editorship of architect George Lister Sutcliffe, this set contains the guidance of several authors on the construction of modern houses. Illustrated, with five plates to volumes I, II, IV, and V, four plates to volume III, and three plates to volume VI, collated and complete. The six volumes contain sections on construction, water supply, drainage, sewage disposal, ventilation, lighting, and sanitation. With some scribbles to the verso of the rear endpaper of volume I. With fourteen pages of adverts to the rear of volume VI, and a list of subscribers to Modern House Construction. Undated. Dated using JISC from a copy held at the University of Cambridge Library. From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the ‘Journal of Architecture’.

Condition

In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the joints. The extremities are a little bumped, as is the head and tail of the spine. A centimetre of cloth is flapping to the rear board of volume II. The front hinge of volume I is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with the odd patch of spotting towards the front and rear of the volumes.
