'Life on the Mississippi', a new edition published in 1899. Recounting Twain's experiences as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River in the days before the American Civil War. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and many in-text illustrations.
'The Stolen White Elephant', a new edition published in 1902. A short story collection including the detective mystery in which a Siamese white elephant disappears in New Jersey.
Written by Mark Twain, one of the most popular American authors of all time.
Bookplate of Hugh Gurney Barclay to the front pastedowns. Barclay was a member of the Royal Victorian Order, and held the office of the Justice of Peace.
Condition
In a half calf signed binding by Henry Sotheran, with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. A few light marks and patches of rubbing to the boards and spines. Spots to the fore edges. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with some odd spots, mostly due to the spots to the fore edges. Spots heavier to 'White Elephant'.
