Description

'The Stones of Venice' was written after a trip to Italy in November 1849, and focuses on the architecture of Venice, framed within a history of the city.

John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a prominent art critic and historian of the Victorian age, who wrote on a broad scope including art and architecture, philosophy, ornithology, politics and literature, taking forms such as poetry, essays, letters and travel guides. 

Complete in three volumes.

Volume I is illustrated with twenty-one plates, including one in colour. Volume II is illustrated with twenty-one plates, including two in colour. Volume III is illustrated with twelve plates.

Collated, complete.

Condition

In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart, with some rubbing to the head of volume II resulting in loss to the leather, as well as a little loss to the raised bands and extremities. Small ownership inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the odd spot more noticeable to the early and later leaves.
