'The History of Henry Esmond' is a historical work telling the memories of Henry Esmond, a colonel serving for Queen Anne, against the backdrop of the English Restoration. Thackeray later wrote a sequel, 'The Virginians'.
English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was most renowned for his novel 'Vanity Fair' which satirises life in early 19th century Britain. Thackeray was primarily known for his satires and parodies, criticising high society and the fickle aspirations of its members, such as profitability, marriage and power.
Profusely illustrated throughout with full plates and vignettes.
Condition
In a half crushed morocco binding with lovely marbled endpapers. Externally very smart, slight rubbing to the head of the spine, raised bands and extremities resulting in a little loss to the leather. Internally firmly bound, pages are bright and clean, with just the occasional spot.
