Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

An uncommon work.

W. T. Stead's diatribe about police corruption in New York State, a vicious attack against the police force and government in the state. 'Satan's Invisible World Displayed' is an important piece of investigative journalism into the corruption in the American police and government. Stead likens the influence of the police in New York to the Reign of Terror.

The election for the Mayor of Greater New York was underway during the writing process of this work, which resulted in the Democratic Robert A. Van Wyck being elected.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, thirty-six full-page illustrations, and many in-text illustrations.

Stead was possibly the most famous journalist in the British Empire during his career, a pioneer in investigative journalist. He fought for a bill that raised the age of consent from 13 to 16. Stead died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

Issued as the 'Review of Reviews' Annual for 1898. Founded in 1890, this was Stead's venture in establishing a global publishing empire with his monthly journal.
