Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Dated using Copac. A selection of children poetry by the brother and sister writing duo, Charles and Mary Lamb.there work was often aimed at children and young people, with their abridged version of Shakespeare's works, 'Tales from Shakespeare' arguably their most successful project. Aside from their literary careers, the lives of these siblings have also been a cause for great intrigue, when in 1796 Mary murdered her mother, Elizabeth Lamb. Suffering with mental illness, and being declared a 'lunatic' by the coroner, Mary would go on to spend much of her life in and out of medical facilities. It was later, whilst mary was under the care of Charles that the pair began to write together. This particular volume, 'Poems for Children' was first published in 1810, and it was its success that the family gained social mobility and financial stability. Illustrated throughout by Winifred Green. A charming volume of poetry, aimed at children, ideal for those with an interest in children's literature, or indeed these two 19th century writers.
