Nansen's exciting first hand account of his 1893 to 1896 Norwegian Polar Expedition, also known as the Fram expedition.
The Fram expedition was an attempt by Nansen to reach the geographical North Pole. Though they did not reach their goal, they did achieve a record Farthest North latitude.
This account was an instant success, feeding the public's fascination of Polar exploration.
Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, one colour plate, one colour folding map, fifty-nine plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete.
Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, fifty-one plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, all plates are present, bound without the half-title.
Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper of Volume I, a prize inscription to Clement Jones.
Condition
In the original publisher' cloth binding, Volume II rebacked with the original boards and spine restored with new endpapers. Externally, with some rubbing and marks to the boards and spines, heavier mark to the rear board of Volume I. Light bumping to the spines and extremities. Backstrip of Volume II is faded. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with some odd spots. Folding map of Volume I with a closed tear. Frontispiece of Volume II is clipped with loss to the image.
