Description

Early Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The second edition of this work.

Complete in two volumes.

Nansen's exciting first hand account of his 1893 to 1896 Norwegian Polar Expedition, also known as the Fram expedition.

The Fram expedition was an attempt by Nansen to reach the geographical North Pole. Though they did not reach their goal, they did achieve a record Farthest North latitude.

This account was an instant success, feeding the public's fascination of Polar exploration.

Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, one colour plate, fifty-nine plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete.

Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, one colour folding map, fifty-one plates, and in-text illustrations. Collated, complete.

A previous owner's ink inscription to the front free-endpaper of each volume, dated 1910. A blindstamp to the front free-endpaper of Volume II.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with just some minor shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. A small blind stamp to the front free-endpaper of Volume II, and a previous owner's ink inscription to the front free-endpaper of both volumes. Sticker residue to the pastedowns of Volume I. Internally, hinges are strained to both volumes. Remaining binding is firm. A few small closed tears to the folding map in Volume II, along with an amateur tape repair to the folding map at the gutter. Pages contain the odd handling mark, but are generally bright and clean.
