1898 Cycle and Camp
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce
First Edition second printing of Cycle and Camp by Thomas Hiram Holding in the original publisher's pictorial cloth binding.
The publication of this first edition was taken over by De Vere from Ward Lock. This copy has a sticker over the original Ward Lock publishing info replacing it with De Vere.
A very rare survival. Details the author's cycling and camping trip in Connemara which is in the West of Ireland.
Thomas Hiram Holding was an early pioneer of camping and wrote 'The Camper's handbook' nine years later.
The 'Association of Cycle Campers' which he founded in 1901 went on to become the Camping and Caravanning Club. He also founded the Bicycle Touring Club in 1878 which became the Cyclist's Touring Club, now Cycling UK.
Densely illustrated throughout with monochrome photographs, in text illustrations and maps. Includes a monochrome photographic plate as the frontispiece. Collated, complete.
A scarce edition with only five held in libraries.
Unusual publication information to the title page, in which the updated information with L. De Vere & Co., has been stuck to the title page. When held to the light the original publishing information is visible, which states it was published by Ward, Lock & Co. Limited.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. There are some light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot.
