Comprised of 'The Workers, An Experiment in Reality: The West', the first edition, and 'The Workers, A Experiment in Reality: The East', an early edition from 1899, first published in 1897.

Bound in the publisher's original uniform cloth.

Walter Wyckoff was a American sociologist, being a professor of political economics at Princeton University.

Walter Wyckoff's "experiment in reality" consisted of a nineteen-month long trek across America, between 1891 and 1893, working as an unskilled laborer. Wyckoff's aim was to try and understand the lives and prospects of unskilled laborers in America, with the hope to bring this alternate world to the attention of the middle-class.

These works are comprised of the travel notes and observations made by Wyckoff during this time.

Illustrated with thirty-one plates and a frontispiece to 'The West' and four plates and a frontispiece to 'The East'. Collated, complete.

Condition

Bound in the publisher's original uniform cloth. Externally, excellent, with light bumping to the extremities and the odd mark to cloth, heavier to 'The West'. A little fading to the spine of 'The West'. Ink inscription to the front paste down of 'The West'. Internally firmly bound to 'The East' and generally firmly bound to 'The West'. Pages bright and clean with the occasional handling mark. Publisher's advertising page mostly torn out to 'The West'.
