What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding, Signed Binding

Complete in eight volumes. In a signed binding by Hatchards. A collection of the journals of Charles Greville, an diarist who was the Clerk of the Council in Ordinary, serving under Kings George IV and William IV, and Queen Victoria. The diaries are an exceptional historical resource on the life and works of the three successive sovereigns, with Greville's first hand experiences. The publication of these journals originally caused uproar, with Queen Victoria thinking that was scandalous, due to Greville's apparent indiscretion, ingratitude, and disloyalty towards the monarchs. Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I. Edited by the journalist Henry Reeve. The journals were given to Reeve only a few hours before his death. Bookplate to the front pastedowns of Volumes I, II, and VII, 'Cyril Duncombe Fitzroy'. Bookplate to the recto to the front endpaper of Volumes I, II, and VII, and the front pastedowns to the rest of the volumes, 'Thomae Zamoyski'. Henry Sotheran label to the verso to the front endpaper of Volume I.
