In half calf bindings. Bookplate to the front paste down of each volume, showing that this collection once belonged to Sir William Eden, 7th and 5th Baronet (1849-1915). Sir William was a British politician, former colonel and local magistrate, described as eccentric and often foul-tempered. He was also a talented watercolourist, who exhibited regularly in London and Paris, and a collector of Impressionist art. This collection of works by John Addington Symonds includes: Sketches and Studies in Italy and Greece, Volumes I (1905), II (1898) and III (1898); and his Renaissance in Italy series, comprising of Italian Literature, Parts I (1902) and II (1904); The Catholic Reaction, Parts I and II (1904); Revival of Learning (1904); The Age of the Despots (1904); and The Fine Arts (1905). Frontispiece to Volume III of Sketches and Studies in Italy and Greece. Frontispieces to The Age of the Despots, and to Volume I of The Catholic Reaction, which depict the author. John Addington Symonds (1840-1893) was an English poet, literary critic, and cultural historian. He was best known for his work on the Renaissance, which forms the major part of this collection.
Condition
In half calf bindings. Externally very smart, with minor rubbing to the extremities and the spine, and bumping to the boards. Renaissance in Italy, Catholic Reaction Vol I is a little soiled to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for offsetting to the free end papers and a scattering of spots to the paste downs and free end papers.
