The first edition of this work. Originally published in five volumes and later expanded to seven, here complete in seven volumes in the original publisher's uniform cloth binding. 

Containing a sweeping history of the Royal Navy, from a civil history of naval affairs to 1066 all the way through to the early twentieth century, with chapters describing the military history of naval affairs, voyages and discoveries, histories of the navy, and more.

A naval history which was extremely well received upon publication and is still considered to be a standard work of reference text. The text remains in print to this day. 

Written by William Laird Clowes. British journalist and historian; this remains his main work. 

The first edition of 1897-1903. 

With numerous illustrations in text as well as five photogravure plates and twenty-eight full page plates to vol. I;  five photogravure plates and fifteen full page plates to vol. II; five photogravure plates and six full page plates to vol. III; five photogravure plates and seven full page plates to vol. IV; five photogravure plates to vol. V and sixteen full page plates to vol. V; five photogravure plates and nine full page plates to vol. VI; and five photogravure plates and thirty-two full page plates to vol. VII. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the original publisher's uniform full cloth bindings with gilt blind stamp to front board, titles in gilt to spine. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, minor bumping to head and tail of spine and extremities. internally, firmly bound. Minor light spotting to occasional leaf only, otherwise pages generally bright and clean. Occasional leaf unopened.
