The first edition of this work exploring the history of celebrated dungeons and prisons during the Monarchy and Revolution in Old Paris, often known as places of detention for important people charged with various offences. Including descriptions and historical sketches of the prisons of Vincennes, Sainte-Pelagie, the Bastille, and la Roquette among others. By Tighe Hopkins, Irish author of several historical works. 

Illustrated with a frontispiece and other plates.

Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, light rubbing to the cloth, some chipping to the tail of the spine. Ex libris with Arnold J Henderson's bookplate to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting to the occasional leaf, the pages appear generally clean and bright. With a frontispiece and full page plates in black and white.
