What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

First edition, illustrated with 111 leaves of plates, collated and complete. In this guide for amateur collectors of portrait miniatures, antiquarian and art historian George Charles Williamson explores the works of early portrait miniaturists Nicholas Hilliard, Isaac Oliver, and Samuel Cooper, before considering the form in the 18th and 19th centuries. Until the development of photography portrait miniatures were popular gifts among European elites, given either as a method of courtship or as a keepsake from departing family members. Williamson wrote prolifically on European art and artists, sometimes publishing under the pseudonym Rowley Cleeve. As well as writing guides for art collectors on various topics, Williamson also catalogued a collection of J. Pierpont Morgan's collection of miniatures and sometimes advised the American banker on his purchases.
