First edition. A preface to front by the author dated April 23, 1897. Dodgson Hamilton Madden (1840 - 1928) was an Irish Unionist Party Member of Parliament and subsequently a Judge. Madden wrote books on legal topics as well as The Diary of Master William Silence: A Study of Shakespeare and of Elizabethan Sport. His scholarship led Maurice Healy to describe him as "a don who had strayed into the Courts". With a letter tipped-in to rear offering the book to the library of Lord Leigh from Field.

Condition

In a vellum binding. Externally, generally smart with just slight wear to extremities and odd marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean throughout but with foxing to endpapers and handling mark to text block edges which are untrimmed.
