What Our Customers Say...

Description

An Important Work, Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed

The first American edition of this fantastic work by Fridtjof Nansen. Complete in two volumes.

Signed to a loose blank page to the first volume "with kindest regards, Fridtjof Nansen."

Comprising the history of the incredible Fram expedition led by Dr Nansen from 1893 to 1896, in which he tried to reach the geographical North Pole by harnessing the north-east current of the Arctic Ocean.

Even though the mission was discouraged by other explorers, Nansen took the Fram with his companion Hjalmas Johansen to the eastern Arctic Ocean, to the New Siberian Islandsand waited for the water to carry it towards the pole. After eighteen months of impatient and slow speed, they both left the ship and carried on the expedition with a team of Samoyed dogs and sledges to reach the Pole.

Although they did not reach it, they did reach the Farthest North latitude of 86°13.6′N. The Fram finally emerged in the North Atlantic Ocean.

With about one hundred and twenty full page and various in text illustrations, sixteen coloured plates in facsimile from Nansen's own sketches, etched portrait, photogravures, and four loose maps to the front pastedown's pocket to volume one. Collated, complete.

With an Appendix by Otto Sverdrup, Captain of the Fram.
