Illustrations include frontispieces and numerous illustrated plates throughout each volume. 

This is a three volume set containing assorted early editions of novels published by Longmans, Green & Co. This set is comprised of 'The People of the Mist' (1897) and 'Cleopatra' (1902) by H. Rider Haggard, and 'Micah Clarke' (1903) by Arthur Conan Doyle.

'The People of the Mist' was originally published in book form by Longmans in October of 1894. This novel is described as a 'classic lost race fantasy novel', which tells the story of a British adventurer who seeks wealth and romance in Africa. While there, he discovers a lost race as well as their monstrous god. With fifteen illustrated plates. 

'Cleopatra' was originally published by Longmans in 1889, and is an adventure novel with the subtitle 'Being an Account of the Fall and Vengeance of Harmachis'. This is a fictionalised and dramatised account wherein Harmachis, the living descendant of the pharaoh's bloodline, is told to overthrow the supposed imposter Cleopatra. With twenty-eight illustrated plates'. 

'Micah Clarke', originally published by Longmans in 1889, is a historical adventure novel set during the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. The book falls under the 'bildungsroman' genre, with the protagonist, Micah Clarke, seeking adventure and falling under the influence of an older and 'world-weary' soldier. With a title page engraving and eight illustrated-plates.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with minimal bumping to the extremities and the spine and a few marks to board. Light fading to the spine, with light fading to the margins and top edge of 'The People of the Mist' and 'Cleopatra'. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to front pastedowns and endpapers of 'The People of the Mist', as well as a bookseller's label. Book club label to the rear pastedown of 'Micah Clarke'. Bookseller's stamp to the reverse of front endpaper to 'Cleopatra'. Internally, firmly bound. Binding is loosening towards the middle of 'Cleopatra'. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to margins of text. Plate between 196 and 197 of 'Cleopatra' has detached from binding. Prior owner's ink signature to reverse of frontispiece in 'Micah Clarke'.
